Yolk Hair Mask

I just love these DIY masks for hair and skin. I mean, if I get to buy some laboratory masks for hair and every time I look for it to be all natural and organic and no parabens and no silicones, why don’t I just do it myself? I wrote about that magical Grow & Shine Oil before and hope it worked as good for you as for me. So here is another one.

img_4675_fotor

This one has lots of natural oils and nutrients as well as yolk proteins. Will revive your hair, make it smooth, soft and shiny. And it takes only two ingredients.

img_4686_fotor

Take 1 yolk and 2 tbsp of Crème fraîche or sour cream. This is a tricky one. In Eastern Europe, we are used to getting super fresh and not processed dairy products from the market. Usually, when I do this mask in England I still try to get the most natural product – organic and less processed. Only then it really has natural benefits.

img_4691_fotor

Mix 1 yolk and 2 tbsp of dairy together. You will need more yolks and dairy depending on your hair length. 1 yolk and 2 tbsp of dairy were just enough to cover my hair. Which I do not have much of at the moment. So adjust accordingly.

Leave it for at least 30 minutes. Wash as usual and dry as usual.

Enjoy your soft hair xxx

Basic Makeup Brushes for every woman

Here are 8 Basic Makeup Brushes every woman should have. The world of makeup is more complicated than it seems, something I’ve learned through own mistakes, so here is a simple guide for any girl who wants some change.

Every girl wants to look pretty. We see those amazing Instagram pictures where other ladies look like Victoria Secret Angels and that sometimes can make us question – what is wrong with me? How come there are so many beauties and here I am with my big cheeks and undereye bags. I stopped questioning once I have learned the secret. img_4718

Oh my God. The easiest way to make anyone feel not good about their looks/house/clothes is to give them Pinterest and few spare hours. Though, it is an inspiration as well. So there I was…watching ‘before and after’..then few youtube videos..then a few more. And I finally got it! Makeup makes a huge difference. It can make anyone look pretty. Even me I guess. And though I still haven’t reached the stage of wearing amazing full makeup on a daily basis, at least for the next few months all my earnings were dedicated to refilling my cosmetic bag.

About two years ago I was going through my makeup bag, some broken shadows left marks on Ted Baker bright textile, few ‘almost finished’ drug store foundations…blush with weird shimmer. What a mess! Being an organised    slightly OCD person I have no idea how did I manage to get to that level of brutal anarchy in my makeup area. I guess I was never too much into makeup. I started wearing it, to the extent, when I was about 14 and since then it was just a routine. img_4827_fotor

So with all my newly acquired makeup addiction I can now share 8 Basic Makeup Brushes which any girl should have. Let’s say if you want to invest, just get these and they can take you a long way.

1. Foundation Brush or Beauty Blender

We used to apply foundation with our bare fingers, so what is this fuss about? Each of us thought that. But I do agree, the finish is very different. With foundation brush or Beauty Blender you do get that flawless effect, your skin’s lying statement ‘I Woke Up Like This!’. And the actual maths behind this all is that with bare fingers you get the most cover, but also visible foundation; with the brush, you have cover and less visible foundation and with the Beauty Blender you have cover and least visible foundation. Whether it is true for you and whether the ‘blender eats foundation’ rumour is totally true I cannot say. I used the Beauty Blender and I loved it a lot, then it started to look like it was stabbed to death and while I had no time to go and buy another one I became comfortable with my brush. Whatever you chose, from Mac, Tarte, Zoeva,  Iconic or any other brand or unbranded brush, as long as it is of a good quality, it will work.

img_4734_fotor

2. Blush Brush

The blush brush I am using at the moment is from Tarte cosmetics , as are the others. You do not have to get these exact ones, you can find which you prefer but I did try quite a few brands and so far I am happy with my choice.

Blush brush should be soft and chose the comfy shape which is easy to use for you and gives the right effect, you want your blush to be slightly visible but not to the extent of the matryoshka doll. img_4739_fotor

3. Bronzer Brush

Same rules as with the blush brush, except you can choose it to be more tightly made, like contouring brush, what I personally like. The right shape is very helpful and basically, does the job for you, just place it under the bone close to your ear and move towards the edge of your lips. At the moment I use two Tarte brushes, more fluffy, Swirl Power Bronzer & Contouring brush, and the more tight one. But you only need one really. img_4743_fotorimg_4748_fotor

4. Big Powder brush

Whether you actually use powder or not, this is always in use, to take off any unwanted traces of makeup from your face at the end, to help blend everything together and so on. You can choose huge and super soft one or smaller tighter one, which can also help you with blush or bronzer sometimes when you are on the go. I use Tarte (what a surprise) and Mac 134. And it just occurred to me that I have bought my Mac brush in 2005…11 years ago! I do not recall any hairs falling off it so far and I can say it is in quite an amazing condition after all these years. Did not age like me. img_4761_fotor

5. Double-ended brow brush

You may skip this one if you use one of those brow pencils with one end being a brush already but otherwise, this is a must have. And double ended it should be for a reason – eyebrows are extremely important and make the huge difference so we want them to be perfect. This brush will be used whatever product you try – brow pencil, pomade or even tinting brows at home. I use Tarte  and Anastasia Beverly Hills . You can also use the angled flat side for my eye shadow to give that blended eyeliner effect or actual line. #lifehack img_4829_fotor

6. Eye shader brush

Basic eyeshadow brush. No need for further explanation. I love my Mac 239 which I think is also 11 years old. Unbelievable…unbelievable that I still have it, after all my crazy relocations. That’s what I call a loyal woman 🙂 img_4772_fotor

7. Big Fluffy eye brush

You may also skip this one, as well as the powder brush, but again, it will bring the blend to perfection and because we do aim for not less than perfection it is essential.

8. Blending brush

Blending eye shadow brush. To blend eyeshadow. With the brush…for eyeshadows blending.

There are so many to choose from, different shapes, materials and sizes. If you do get these 8 Basic Brushes, I suggest you simply go from small to the biggest for eyes, where shader brush is smallest, fluffy is the biggest and these blending one is somewhere in between. It should fit well to your eyelids size, so you can make some nice visible blending of different eyeshadows instead of blending it all into one dirty colour, when the brush is too big, or having very sharp lines when it is too small.

img_4774_fotor

Here are all the brushes you really need. And the last but not the least tip is, when you do have a tight budget, you may always want to go for the double-ended brushes. I have Bronze&Glow , which I use for my (guess what?) bronzer and highlighter, contouring brush , and this double ended brow & eyes brush , which is one of my favourites for eyeshadows because of its nice shape. These are great to have in your work bag or when you are travelling.

Accidental Crab & Whisky Bisque

unnamedIf there would be some food-recycling programme, I would lead that one. Being from overseas I just cannot get used to this kind of trend – throwing away food, whether you just couldn’t finish it all at once or you can’t be bothered cooking it today or any other unreasonable reason. We, in Eastern Europe, brought up by our grannies who went through war and hunger in their young age, just can’t allow ourselves such a waste.

Thus, when after one night’s dinner party with crabs&champagne I saw lots of shells and few little ones left, my brain got excited! Crab Bisque!!!

In the bottom of my memory, I found an image of some famous chef from some famous tv programme, talking about bisque and making its broth out of shells, as this makes it rich and much more delicious. After all, I also believe that any posh modern french dish was once an accidental creation of some not rich but very creative people. Like, sailors. And real bisque would be made definitely not of lobster tails. So here we are. Amazing, healthy, delicious and simple bisque.

I must add a well that I did not have many ingredients, such as saffron or fennel bulb, and never do I use double cream when it is not absolutely necessary. So I guess my version is as budget as it can be.

Crab Shells (use everything), crashed

1 tbsp lemon juice

yellow onion

1-2 garlic cloves

fennel bulb or fennel seeds (1/2 tbsp)

paprika

olive oil

1 shot of whisky (can be replaced with brandy or cognac)

  1. Cover crab shells with water and bring to boil. Leave them ‘cooking’ for 10-20 minutes.unnamed-1
  2. As the same time pre-heat olive oil in a saucepan. Add chopped garlic and sliced onion. Simmer until golden. Add fennel, lemon juice. Simmer. Add the shot of whisky. Leave it on a low heat.
  3. When you see your broth is already quite rich and has funny colour, leave it to cool down a bit and place all in a food processor. unnamed-5
  4. And here is the ‘fun’ part. Crash all the bones, crabs and shells with broth in a food processor. Then crash again. And again. Crash.Crash.Crash! The better it is crashed the richer the bisque. Once you are done, take sieve and silicone spatula and pouring shells& broth through a sieve and pushing it all with a spatula, we will separate all the unwanted crunchy shells from our super-rich broth.
  5. Once you try and make sure your broth is separated well and has no unwanted bits in it, add it to your other ingredients in a saucepan and heat it all through.
  6. Season with salt, paprika. Add more whisky if it became ‘lost’ in your broth.

Serve with some croutons or, as me, toasted rye bread. Some paprika and a piece of crab make it look even more special. Enjoy! unnamed-3

Pumpkin Spice Latte -healthy&delicious autumn treat! 🍂🎃

unnamed-7Autumn always has its features: colder weather, if you live in that kind of climate, yellow leaves, if you have trees where you live, Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte…always. Being not a fan of sweet drinks, I must admit – the image of pumpkin spice latte in autumn is very tempting. So why not?

Here is a simple and totally delicious Pumpkin Spice Latte for you to indulge yourself this autumn. Super-delicious, you can add as much of spices as you want, and it is healthy and guilt-free, so you can have it while working on your weight loss.

I personally also enjoy it as an evening drink, with no coffee part at all, and I can tell you, my dreams are sweetest after a cup of this.

unnamed-3

Ingredients

(Serves 2)

3-4 tbsp pumpkin puree (DIY or buy canned puree)

2 cups of milk

1 small strong coffee (espresso)

1/3 tsp nutmeg , 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/3 ginger  (purely suggested amount, but do it to your taste)

1/2 tbsp honey if pumpkin puree is not sweet enough

unnamed-2

  1. Prepare coffee and pour it into glasses you want to serve your latte in.
  2. Heat the milk in a saucepan (but do not boil, you want it ‘steam’), add pumpkin puree and honey if using. Stir for a minute.
  3. Add Spices and stir for another minute. Do not boil at any point, you want milk to absorb all the spices well. unnamed-4
  4. Pour pumpkin spiced milk to the coffee, sprinkle with some cinnamon or nutmeg and serve.

Enjoy!

Why “Hungry Diets” are bad for you🍴

Today you again realised you want to lose those extra pounds, your belly shakes like a twerking girl’s butt and you haven’t exercised for like a lifetime. You look in the mirror and you decide to eat less..you eat less..and less..maybe a small pack of crisps when you feel like fainting, or you try that fasting diet you have heard about, or just eat one meal a day…probably just a dinner after work. WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG! Stop there, until it is too late.

Even though I honestly believed these ‘hungry diets’ were finally lost and forgotten somewhere in the 90s , more and more often I get questions or see people following the ‘I am hungry, but I am trying to lose weight approach’! Shocking. I will not go into dramatic details and tell you how hunger can influence your health.  Mahatma Gandhi survived 21 days of complete starvation, but is that really the body you are aiming for? If yes, please leave now. And get help. 🙈

fasting

These are 6 simple reasons why hunger is not good for your body.

  1. ‘I fast to lose weight and detox’ . Remember that 2015 trend – fasting for detox ? Detox, or what is usually practised – simply cleanse is not a bad idea and deserves a separate article. But ‘cleanse’ is a very short term type of diet, and in no way should it be kept for weeks or treated as a weight-loss remedy. Most important, being on a healthy clean eating regime, you do not need detox at the first place, as you do not ‘fuel’ yourself with many toxins. On the other hand, using fasting or partial fasting (like eating once a day) – people tend to eat high-fat foods to ‘get the most’ out of that one allowed meal..basically, instead of eating healthy food and getting lean and fit, you starve your body and feed it with rubbish. As I said, I am definitely not against cleanse-diet days etc. until it becomes your usual daily diet. fasting-diet-320x240
  2. Miserable Days. Being hungry, or especially fasting, leads to lower metabolism and higher cortisol – and this is called Stress. And while stress may definitely make you skinny, it is not likely to make you any happier (especially if you are a foodie like me, no food is not just some stress..it is a mega-super-galactical-stress). So why would you make yourself unhappy to achieve something you can get in a completely opposite way? My first and most important rule when going back to the regime (no one is the saint, we all have breakdowns) or starting with a new client is to be excited, motivated and happy! Does it not make it easier to stick to something that makes you feel good? overweight-woman-eating-salad
  3. Workout. Feeling hungry is unlikely to help you to keep motivation for good productive workouts. Even though I personally love having my first workout before breakfast, feeling so light, actual hunger gives you only one desire – to lay down and move less. Do not forget as well that hunger leads to headaches and even excessive drinking of water will not help for long. Lack of exercises leads to my next point…tumblr_myvxbkammj1shs1pdo1_500
  4. Body Quality. Losing weight while fasting or eating not enough nutritious food is invariable. This is not even a question. However, the issue is WHAT weight are you losing? And here is the answer : you lose water, some of those ‘leftovers’ in your stomach and intestine, and most of all – muscles!  All this will leave you definitely lighter, but in no way fitter, healthier or prettier. No one likes jellyfish belly or butt, weak unfit body with stretch marks. 20140526152006-79175
  5. Counting calories. Something I stopped doing after high school. Absolutely unnecessary and out-of-date trend. And here is why:

You only need to count calories when you base your diet on foods like this : 🍨 🍦 🍰 🎂 🍮 🍬 🍭 🍫🍗 🍖 🍤 🍳 🍔 🍟🍕🍝 for one simple reason – you need at least SOME control, and counting carbs/fats/proteins may be too much for a person who believes that eating Cheeseburger is ok as long as it fits in your  daily calories intake.

Eating foods like this  🍏 🍎 🍐 🍊 🍋 🍌 🍉 🍇 🍓 🍈 🍒 🍑 🍍 🍅 🍆 – plants and lean proteins, you can not go wrong. Firstly, because it would be very hard to overeat, One burger has as much calories as a meal with whole chicken breast, grains, veggies and healthy dessert. Guess after which one you will become starving quicker and after which will you feel energised?

6. ‘Afterlife’. Finally, last but not least, what I call ‘afterlife’. This is also one of the most important parts of weight loss – to make sure that it lasts and even if the pre-written meal plan is finished, you are left with healthy and lean body and a bunch of new habits that will ensure you stay lean for life! After feeling hungry and starving yourself to skinny, you are most likely to be left with unsatisfied taste buds and stressed out nerves. It is a question of time until you stuff your face with food like never before and the weight you’ve lost ( which, as you may remember, was water/muscle/tiny bit of fat) will be doubled back AND this time will consist of pure fat instead of whatever it was you’ve lost before.   article-2679007-1f5a573a00000578-276_634x516

Do you still think that starving yourself or just ‘eating rarely’ is a remedy? Hope not. These 6 points are out of 1000.
